  • Why Tweens?

This post is LONG overdue!  Any of you that follow me on Instagram or Facebook have probably noticed a shift for my business into more of the tween and teen market.   Well, I want to finally make it official and explain the thoughts behind these amazing sessions!

Over the years, I have actually done teen and tween sessions without ever really thinking about it or realizing what was happening.  For example, a family from my church paid for a special session for each of their daughters when they were around 14 years old – as a way to celebrate them each getting their braces off.  They had a blast picking out cute clothes, doing their hair and makeup, having outfit changes during the session, and we even incorporated some softball uniform shots for the oldest daughter.    Then 3 years ago, a friend asked if she could hire me for a few hours to take pictures of her daughter (who was turning 13) and her 2 BFF’s.  They came to my studio, took over one of our bedrooms with what felt like their entire wardrobes, and we spent 3 hours photographing them in different outfits and on different backdrops.  This was the 13 year old’s birthday party that year.  Brilliant!  Still, I don’t think I ever even really shared any of the images from that session.  They all turned out great!  It just wasn’t a priority for me since most of my business had always been families and children.

Well, fast forward to 2014.  After much research about the tween market, and seeing a lot of my friends’ kids now entering middle school, I really got the itch to work with more of these kids.   For me, it’s simply SO FUN to photograph middle school and high school kids!  I’ve always shot a handful of seniors each year (and I love senior sessions just as much, but for different reasons).  But what I really like about these younger teens is the fact that they just want to have fun.  And I noticed that treating them like models for a day can really boost their self esteem as well!  So starting in February of 2015, I put out a couple model calls on Instagram, borrowed some teens that I know personally, and started shooting.   It’s been an amazing year!  I’ve met so many great families and great kids.  I’ve built up an amazing portfolio of tween and teen images and I’m so excited to finally start sharing all these sessions from this year.

First some FAQ’s about these new Tween Sessions:

-these are great for the individual tween, but are even more fun with friends.

-BFF sessions are a BLAST!  You can even split the session fee with other families.

-A Tween session or a BFF session make the perfect birthday party or birthday gift!

-The middle school years are the forgotten age for portraits.  Most parents just don’t think to capture their middle schoolers in photographs the way they did when they were infants and children.  But guess what – middle school kids change just as much and just as fast in ONE YEAR as babies do!  They need to be photographed!

-Tweens need a good self esteem boost.  They are starting to form their own opinions and are becoming their own person.  Part of what I do is try to capture what interests THEM.  A favorite pair of shoes, headphones, hat.  Do they play sports, dance, draw, read?  This is the perfect opportunity to capture WHO THEY ARE at this age and stage of life.    None of this can be really represented well if I try to get a few shots of them during a regular family session.  They need their own session to be free to be themselves.

Here’s the introductory pricing for TWEEN and BFF sessions for the remainder of 2015 and all of 2016:

$125 Session fee for an Individual tween session

$175 Session fee for a BFF session (can be as many kids as you want!)

I have several new products that are modern and trendy that teens will love!

This week I’ll start blogging each TWEEN session I’ve done so far this year.   Here’s a little preview since you can’t have a blog post without a picture. 🙂

  • Madison [Lakeland High School Senior Photography]

Last fall I was fortunate to meet and spend a couple of hours with one of the members of the Class of 2015.   I had so much fun working with Madison for the 2 hours we were together.  She is a gorgeous girl with a beautiful personality, and great style I might add! 🙂  I love how all these images turned out…and was excited to play around with my off camera lighting a little bit.

Wanted to mention that the chair in these pictures belonged Madison’s grandparents.  I love love love when a family incorporates a sentimental piece like this into their session.  It makes them that much more special.  Thanks Madison for being the perfect model!

  • The ‘R’ Family [Lakeland family and teen photography]

I’m thinking it’s now safe to share more fun family sessions that I had in the fall….everyone’s Christmas cards should be sent out by now. 🙂  It’s January 5th and I’m so excited to say that even mine are done and were sent out a week ago as well!! I think that’s a record for me!  (I’ll share my family’s images soon too.)

This family is near and dear to my heart….friends from church first, and now clients and small groupies as well.  This mama and I even formed our own band in 2014….but that’s a long story. 🙂  I just love this family and had a blast with them again this year with their family session.  I think this is one of the fastest sessions I’ve had….the sky was threatening rain…it was dark and dreary.  We got in, got the shots, and went to dinner.  My kind of night!  Here are a few of my favorites.

  • The ‘E’ Family [Lakeland/Orlando family photography]

Happy New Year everyone!! I really can’t believe it’s 2015 already.  The older I get, the faster time flies I think.  🙂  The fall has been as crazy as ever for me with family sessions for the holidays.  I actually stayed in town for Christmas this year, so work hasn’t really slowed down yet.  I had the priviledge of photographing several families that had all their relatives in town for Christmas….something I don’t usually get to do when I’m out of town for Christmas.  So I’ll be spending the next couple of weeks playing catch up, and during that time I hope to share all the amazing families I got to meet over the past couple of months.

This first family I’d like to share asked if I could meet them at one of their favorite hotels over near Disney.   I love exploring new places, so I was very excited to meet them at the Waldorf Astoria in Orlando.  What a gorgeous hotel!  We had a blast walking around the lobby, the golf course, and the pool deck.   They really wanted some posed family shots as well as some journalistic style candids that captured them just enjoying their time as a family.  Mom is due to have a baby any day now, so they really wanted to capture their life as a family of 3 before it all changes.  🙂  Hope you enjoy looking through these images as much as I enjoyed taking them……

  • The R Family [Lakeland family photography]

So…I realized today that I never shared the images from this family session I had with good friends from church.    Looking at the date stamp….um….we did these in (cough, cough) November (cough, cough).  Woops!!  Better late than never I always say!!  🙂

Like I said, these are great friends of ours from church who we really just got to know well last year.  I had never spent a lot of time around their boys before this, and I had so. much. fun!  Really, they had me laughing pretty much the entire time we were together.  We met at Florida Southern (where we all happened to have graduated from college).   Loved their outfits, loved their family banter, loved them.  Not much else to say. 🙂

  • Keyton c/o 2014 [Lakeland High School Senior photography]

I was so happy to shoot several high school seniors this year.  Would love to do more!!  Keyton was great to work with.  We met on location first, and then moved to the studio for a few shots as well.  His brother and puppies even jumped in some of the shots.  Better late than never Keyton – but congratulations on graduating and good luck with your next chapter of life in the fall!!

  • Emi [Lakeland teen photography]

Emi was so fun to work with.  This was a “just because” session…which I love! You don’t always need to wait for the big milestones (like graduating high school) to have an excuse for fun pictures.  I think the “official” reason I got to photograph Emi was because she got her braces off a while ago.  I was just happy because one of my favorite subjects to work with is teens!   Emi was no exception.  Can you believe she’s only 14?!  Super sweet and beautiful….thanks Emi for being a great model!
